Real NC Wedding : Jeff & Katie Durham Nc Wedding By Vesic Photography
Jeff & Katie’s wedding brought me back to North Carolina for a fantastic wedding at a favorite location in The Cotton Room in Durham, NC.. We started off at Posh Salon with hair and makeup before heading to the Marriott to get ready. From there, we went with the Bridal Party and parents to Duke Gardens, where Jeff & Katie had their first look under the Pergola – which is where we start with our first image, and their first kiss.
First Looks are becoming quite popular with couples as a way for them to have a bit more control over how they see each other for the first time. In addition to being able to work with couples to set a beautiful backdrop, the process is slowed down so they can savor the moment before seeing each other for the first time. Typically you see the bride approaching the groom from behind, but lately I’ve started having couples holding hands with their backs to each other, like you see here. It gives me a bit more time to compose some nice images, and more importantly, it gives the couple time to take in the moment. They’re in control of when they let go of each other’s hands, as well as how and when they want to turn around and see each other. With Jeff & Katie, it was pretty warm this particular weekend in June, so under the Pergola at Duke Gardens was a perfect shaded location for the first look, with the Bridal Party and family looking on behind them.
The next several photos take us back to the start of the day at Posh and the Marriott. Some makeup in the foreground help frame Katie nicely as make up gets applied, while showing off the exposed beams of Posh’s salon. The lines from the beams draw your eye through the image and are enhanced by the same grout lines in the bricks.
I chose to show Jeff tying his shoes, because it’s something we don’t see too often, but was intriguing as he was surrounded by his groomsmen. The next shot of Jeff pouring the bourbon is perhaps my favorite shot of the guys from the morning. I find it classy, unassuming and cool.
Katie had such soft and beautiful getting ready images. Her two bridesmaids complimented her perfectly, especially with body language and positioning. Jeff & Katie’s mom’s were both next to me, so we’re seeing their vantage point.
After the first look under the Pergola, we stayed in that general area for bridal party and family photos. It was a perfect location because it looks great and it was shaded, keeping everyone cool and happy. After sending the bridal party back to the bus to get some drinks and a/c, I went with Jeff & Katie back into the wooded areas of the gardens where we got some great images including one of my favorites of Katie leading Jeff out of a covered path as we headed to the Cotton Room.
The large windows and curtains at the Cotton Room allow us to do a lot with light, shadows and framing. You can see some nice natural shading on the beautiful table and settings as well as the high contrast of light and dark on the dessert cake. During the ceremony, the white draping frames Jeff on one side while an exposed post frames him on the left, ensuring not only the focus but also enhancing the intimacy of the moment. The same effect is brought back in the second photo of their first dance with the vertical image complimenting the natural lines from the posts and windows.
I had such a great time with everyone at the wedding – and it was made even better by spending it with old friends from previous weddings. Over the past year, I’ve shot three weddings in which Jeff, Katie, Jenn, Adam, Yuval and Swathi have all been a part of, and they’ve all been fantastic. Of course, I can’t forget my man Donald, who has managed to find himself in 6 photos here, and in every blog post from the other weddings as well. I only wish I was able to get Adam in the photo that has Jeff, Yuval and myself in it. The three groomsmen – it would have been perfect.
Thanks to the Cotton Room for providing it’s standard degree of excellence while hosting the wedding as well as to all the other great vendors who helped. Cheers to Jeff & Katie on their one month anniversary. Hooman
